Boracay at last!

30 09 2008

Yey! I am so freakin’ happy! Finally, I was able to avail Cebu Pacific’s promo Go Lite Fare. And because of that, I will be on my way to Boracay on November 18 with some friends! I was able to book the same flight as theirs, but I’ll be on a different flight back. Thanks to Aden who informed right away that there’s another promo. So now, it is confirmed! I’m just so happy.

November is still a month and a half away. There’d still be a lot of time to prepare the things needed, to save money, and to lose some weight haha! I hope I’ll be able to do all those. Aaahh, Boracay! The white sand, the beach, the sun, the fresh air. Just the thought of it excites me even more. It would probably put me into some sleepless nights. I can’t wait! ;)

Charice earns rave reviews from NYTimes & NYPost

24 09 2008

Fresh from the success of her performance in the concert of international pop star Celine Dion at Madison Square Garden, sixteen-year-old Charice continues to gain more fans after two major newspapers, the New York Times and the New York Post, heaped praises on her performance last September 15.

In an article published September 16, reviewer Jon Caramanica of The New York Times described Charice’s voice as “impressive” and praised the young diva for giving a rougher, more emotional edge to her performance of Dion’s hit song “Because You Loved Me.”

“They performed ‘Because You Loved Me’, though Ms. Dion mostly stayed out of the way as Ms. Pempengco explored the song’s heretofore unheard rougher edges, with ample gesticulations and melisma.

“As Ms. Pempengco brought the crowd to its feet, Ms. Dion struck poses behind her: awestruck wonder, heartfelt empathy, ambient triumph,” the New York Times review read.

A separate review written by Dan Aquilante of the New York Post described Charice’s performance as the brightest moment of the Celine Dion concert.

“One of the most interesting turns in this show was the MSG debut of 16-year-old vocal prodigy Charice Pempengco, whose manager, Oprah Winfrey – that’s right – secured the Philippine singer a duet with Celine for the song ‘Because You Loved Me.’

“The Charice segment was the night’s brightest moment. The teen was able to blast notes with Celine-like power, but she was also able to get in touch with the song’s emotions,” the review read.

Online videos of Charice’s performance at the Dion concert showed people giving a standing ovation to the young Filipina after the duet.

Before they performed, Dion introduced Charice to the audience as a Filipina whose voice “can literally blow the roof off Madison Square.”

“Charice vowed to save her mom from a life of desperation and despair. You know, through prayers and dreams and God-given talent, an incredible voice, Charice entered and won every singing contest in her native country and eventually, was noticed by such influential people such as Oprah and Oprah took her under her wings and David Foster joined in,” Dion said.

She said she invited Charice as a guest to her concert after seeing the girl perform on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”

After inviting Charice to the stage, Dion praised the vocal prodigy and asked if she was nervous. When Charice answered yes, Dion said she always remembered to take the advice given by her manager and future husband, Rene Angelil, when she first started singing at the age of 12.

“He told me ‘Celine, I know you’re nervous. Don’t be scared. You love to sing. When you go up there, you’ll be nervous. Don’t be.’ I will give you an image that you can think about. Think that all the people you see in front of you are your brothers and sisters. You are singing in your living room and it’s your family,” Dion told Charice.

Charice then said that she was ready to sing and dedicated their song to her mother, Raquel.

Ever the gracious performer, Dion let Charice take the lead in the song – allowing the young singer to show off her vocal prowess that brought the house down.

“You did amazing, and the roof of the Madison (blew) up tonight,” Dion said after the performance, adding that she could not wait until Charice had her own concert in Madison Square Garden.

“When you do perform in Madison Square, are you going to invite me? I love you and I can not wait to be with you to perform here for a whole concert,” she added before Charice left the stage to more applause.

‘The Most Talented Girl in the World’

Charice’s whirlwind rise to popularity started after YouTube videos of her jaw-dropping performances caught the attention of popular US TV host Ellen Degeneres. Her performance at the “Ellen Degeneres Show” later led to appearances in the Oprah Winfrey show as well as performances with international stars Michael Buble and Josh Groban.

Charice also performed with renowed tenor Andrea Bocelli in his hometown in Italy.

In the episode titled “Dream Comes True”, Oprah tracked the rags-to-riches story of Charice starting with how she once witnessed how her father almost killed her mother in a fit of rage before neighbors stopped him.

Charice said it was then that she and her mom decided to live their own lives away from their father. Charice’s mom worked 16-hour days, six days a week to make ends meet while Charice signed up for more than 80 contests to help her mother.

“I really want[ed] to help Mom,” she told Oprah. “When I’m joining singing contests, and I won some $50, she was, like, ‘Okay, we’re going to have some food for one month, and we’re very happy.’”

She was later able to save enough of her contest winnings to help her mother pay for an apartment. In 2005, she joined the ABS-CBN talent contest “Little Big Star” where she placed 2nd runner-up to contest winner Sam Concepcion.

The series of YouTube videos posted by an avid fan later led to Charice performing at Star King, a famous talent show in South Korea, on October 2007.

But it was Charice’s performance in the Oprah Winfrey Show last May that cemented her claim to fame. After hearing Charice sing, Oprah said she couldn’t get the little girl with the big voice out of her head and invited her back to the show.

Instead of flying back to the Philippines after her appearance on The Oprah Show, producers pulled Charice off the plane and brought her back to Harpo Studios. Then, Oprah called legendary producer David Foster to see what the starmaker could do for Charice.

Oprah, who once called Charice “The Most Talented Girl in the World”, says she is impressed not just with Charice’s voice but with her attitude in life.

“One of the things I love most about Charice is that no matter what obstacles she’s faced in her life, she’s never given up on her dream of something better,” Oprah said.

WOW! And I mean W-O-W!!! Charice never fails to make us really really proud! Like seriously damn proud of this little girl. Amazing talent, wonderfully gifted, with a big heart. She really have gotten far at this early stage of her very promising career. Being able to achieve outstanding milestones some great and big Pinoy artists have never accomplished before. Truly, Charice can be considered the most talented girl in the world! People like her are indeed our country’s source of pride and inspiration. Anyway, just check out this video from YouTube, the complete version of her segment from Celine Dion’s concert at the Madison Square Garden. As always, she gave an excellent and amazing performance!

MABUHAY KA, CHARICE!!! ;)

Raving Reviews 4

23 09 2008

Wow, it has been a while since I posted a review here. I usually post them on my Multiply, that’s why sometimes I get lazy to transfer them here. But since I am on a masipag mode today, I will copy paste them now. I have finally watched a movie this month! Two actually, one in a cinema and one at home with my best bud, the dvd player. And I also got to finish the novel I am reading, so here it is.

Aaaahh, classic films! There’s something about it that amazes me, and this one won’t be an exception. I bought a copy of this movie last month but only got to watch it the other day. I liked the entirety and simplicity of it. The profoundness which really made me awake watching in the wee hours of the morning is really something. No wonder it was dubbed as one of the best film ever (or something like that hehe).

And this Gregory Peck guy, damn ang galing nya! The most effective actor to play a lawyer, for me. His deep voice says it all. I love the ones who played as his kids Scout and Jem, ang cute nila! Two thumbs up for their acting! At dito pala ang movie debut ni Robert Duvall, he played Boo, the mysterious neighbor. Sa ending lang sya pinakita hehe! A brilliant film! Too bad I didn’t get to read the book first. Maybe soon, and then watch the movie again after reading it haha.. ;)

Well yeah, this is the one I watched in a cinema with a friend. It was one Monday afternoon and I had this itch to catch a movie. What I actually want to watch is the horror flick The Gravedancers, but my dear friend Vicky told me she wanted to laugh and feel good instead of be frightened. So off we went to fall in line to get our tickets when I suddenly noticed that there’s a lot of old people in line too. Vicky and I can’t help but laugh, not out loud though, coz they might get offended. Turns out that it was Grandparents Day that day and my cousin informed me that senior citizens are free to watch movies every Monday and Tuesday. Kaya pala! hehe!

So, about the movie. It was a nice one, very Pinoy style but very edgy. Sarah Geronimo and John Lloyd Cruz were exceptionally funny and cute on screen. They blend well, I think. Lots of funny scenes. I liked the one when they were in a meeting then Miggy (John Lloyd) teased Laida (Sarah) if she’s still a virgin and if she can say the word Sex. He went, “Kaya mo bang sabihin ang salitang Sex? Sex? Sex?!” Really funny! The story’s a bit usual, same old drama on the side with the main characters’ love story in the middle of it all. Their acting was a bit average, but I always liked John Lloyd’s acting so I’ll be biased on this. Everything else is ok, we had fun watching it!

It took a while for me to finish this, kasi madalas pagod at antok na from OT haha! Anyway, I still liked it. Was a bit boring at times, basically because Bella’s in pain when Edward left her, but ok naman yung mga succeeding stories. I like how Jacob’s character filled the gap of loss for Bella, how he renewed her and how he himself made it somewhat complete and safe. My most favorite part was when they went to Italy to stop Edward killing himself. Made me jump off my seat.

I also, especially, liked the first part, when in her dream, Bella thought who she saw was her grandmother pero sya pala un! Creepy! Pero ang galing. And also the werewolves thing, I can really imagine those huge creatures. Very well written and exciting most of the times. Hats off to Ms. Meyer! I will probably buy the sequel next week, it should be good hehe! Medyo bitin yung ending eh, but still, worth reading.

What’s my name again?!

22 09 2008

Got this one from Keysi aka Astroboy of The Rushers haha! A cute post from her Multiply. Reminds me of the importance of remembering names. Don’t we all have names and nicknames we either love or loathe? Time to remember it now! Good thing mine were all nice ones, close to my actual name and none of those weird ones given to poke fun at. Well, sometimes it’s nice to have one of those too haha! Ok, so here’s the rule of this “game”: List all the names you were called by and the people who call you that. Plain and simple. Let’s start the ball rollin’!

  • Paul Ignatius - my birth name, given to me by my aunt Jean. There’s actually a story behind it. The day I was born is the anniversary of Pope John Paul’s visit here in the Philippines, and it is also the birthday of Saint Ignatius. Brilliant, eh?! ;)
  • Paul - the name I usually go by anywhere haha :)
  • Paulo / Paolo – my childhood nickname, used by family and friends. And now by my previous TM and some officemates (they heard Mom call me by that name in one of my birthday celebration at home).
  • Pao / Pawie – another childhood nickname used by relatives on my Mom’s side, usually my cousins.
  • Pong – this one used by relatives on my Papa’s side.
  • Bogs - my high school friends call me this until now, it’s from one of the characters of the book we fondly read way back called B1 Gang.
  • P for Paul - my officemate Nani originally called me by this name, and was passed on by my now TM/batchmate Morrell (this was Nani’s legacy, according to him, calling me P for Paul haha!).
  • Paulie – it is only Erry, my batchmate, who call me by this name.
  • Ignacio – it is only Rhea, another batchmate, who call me by this name. The reason I won’t be able to explain hehe ;)
  • Polding – bed?! haha! an officemate of mine, her name is Joie, fondly call me this.
  • Fol – coined by Edgar, one of the Workforce people at the office.
  • Paulino – my long time friend and then neighbor Ate Sha was the one who coined this name for me.
  • Parekoy – from my Pareng Nhinz, my bestest bud ever! ;)
  • Wiggle – used by my college friends Popoy Company. The reason? You go figure hehe :)
  • Mah Brotha! – from mah sistah Farah, the best sistah in this whole damn world! I swear! haha ;)
  • Mahal/Anibal/Alex/Salvador – hahaha! only one lady call me by all these names, my everdearest Mahal/Peregrina/Beauty/Isabel, Vicky! ;)

Geez, ang dami ko palang name haha! It was nice remembering all of it, and all the people and stories behind it. This post really made me smile and made my day! ;)

Thank You!

18 09 2008

To all my blog supporters, readers, viewers and fans haha!

We now surpassed the

hits! Wuhoo! ;)

I was actually a bit hesitant before if I’ll sign up here at WP, but I really would want a site where I can stash my previous blogs. They were somewhat scattered around several online communities I am part of. So when I heard about WP thru Chico Garcia, I checked it out right away. And now, who would’ve thought that it already reached 10,000 hits haha! Huge thanks to those posting comments! Also sending out some love to my friends who have been posting comments (yung iba napipilitan lang kasi ang kulit ko daw haha!) It’s just that I want some people I know to at least post some.

Anyway, just join me in the next posts to come. Hopefully I’ll be able to blog regularly. OT has been a pain in the ass, still. But just the same, much thanks to everyone! (feels like an Oscar winner hehe!) ;)

Deeply Moved

9 09 2008

Waaah! This has got to be my new favorite song! Amazing. Love it so much!

THE MAN WHO CAN’T BE MOVED, The Script

Going back to the corner where I first saw you,
Gonna camp in my sleeping bag. I’m not gonna move,
Got some words on cardboard got your picture in my hand,
Saying if you see this girl can you tell her where I am,
Some try to hand me money they don’t understand,
I’m not… broke I’m just a broken hearted man,
I know it makes no sense, but what else can I do,
How can I move on when I’ve been in love with you…

Cos if one day you wake up and find that you’re missing me,
And your heart starts to wonder where on this earth I can be,
Thinking maybe you’d come back here to the place that we’d meet,
And you’d see me waiting for you on the corner of the street.

So I’m not moving…
I’m not moving.

Policeman says son you can’t stay here,
I said there’s someone I’m waiting for if it’s a day, a month, a year,
Gotta stand my ground even if it rains or snows,
If she changes her mind this is the first place she will go.

I’m not moving…
I’m not moving.

People talk about the guy
Whos waiting on a girl…
Oohoohwoo
There are no holes in his shoes
But a big hole in his world…

Hmmmm

Maybe I’ll get famous as man who can’t be moved,
And maybe you won’t mean to but you’ll see me on the news,
And you’ll come running to the corner…
Cos you’ll know it’s just for you

I’m the man who can’t be moved
I’m the man who can’t be moved…

Cos if one day you wake up and find that you’re missing me,
And your heart starts to wonder where on this earth I can be,
Thinking maybe you’d come back here to the place that we’d meet,
And you’d see me waiting for you on the corner of the street.
[Repeat in background]

So I’m not moving…
I’m not moving.

I’m not moving…
I’m not moving.

Going back to the corner where I first saw you,
Gonna camp in my sleeping bag not I’m not gonna move.

Ohgusto!

3 09 2008

Is it really the start of the -ber months?! Geez, next thing we know it’s already Christmas time! Just few months ahead! But before that, of course I need to do a usual monthly recap. This time, for the month of August. I’d have to say that it was a pretty busy month for me, in it’s most extreme definition. Crazy, I might add! It has been one helluva month. Here’s how I spent it, a detailed approach on who and what shaped the thirtyone days of my August.

Too much work! Well, I should’ve included this one on my Too Much entry but this particular detail speaks well of how I spent my entire work month.  An unforeseen change prompted our department to make overtime mandatory. Announced the last week of July gearing up, we started the month doing an hour and forty five minutes of overtime everyday, either before or after our shift. At first it was kind of ok, but when it started to sink in that we’ll do OT until next month, it immediately became our favorite subject of loathe. Yes we receive more pay come suweldo time, but as most of us say, I think it would be more appropriate if I’ll quote this in Tagalog, “hindi mababayaran ang maayos na tulog!” Even if it’s just a couple of hours, still it makes one hell of a big difference. It’s exhausting and draining, I tell you. Yeah, we understand that they only meant business, but still, the damage has been done. But we are surviving! On the other hand, if rendering OT everyday would make me look good like this guy on the picture, I would willingly abide!

Mom in province. My ever hyper and beautiful mom went over to her birthplace in Calbayog City, Samar around the second week of August, to attend with some business matter. She should’ve went back home after 7 days, but they waited for harvest instead until the end of the month. Having said that, I was in a way back to doing some major house chores like when she was in China last year. But thank God my stepdad is here, he’s always the one doing the cooking and the laundry. Yey!

No movies?! Yes. Nada. Zero. Zilch. Wala. Because of doing too much work and mom not present here at home, I got so busy and tired everyday that I haven’t found time to watch any movies. I even bought some dvds few weeks back, but really can’t watch it because either I’m so sleepy after work or got loads of house stuff to do. It’s just a proven fact when I mentioned that last month can probably hold a record of most movies watched. And now, not even one! Which makes me think that I should try to watch one later. Hmmm..

One World, One Dream. That’s the Olympics catch phrase, but it seems that our Olympic dream has not come true yet. Well, there’s always next time but is four years not enough time for our government/commission to produce Olympic caliber athletes? I mean, we sure have a lot out there, but aren’t getting the right support. So we’ll just probably wait a little more and hang in there for our much awaited Gold. I actually chanced on a list of medals the Philippines had since it started. And mind you, we only had 9 since 1924! Imagine that. The last was Onyok’s Silver medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Here’s a complete list:

Anyway, the Beijing Olympics is probably the most watched in the history (thanks to the worldwideweb), had the most interesting personalities and also the most controversy filled I think. From the opening ceremony, the one who sang in it up until the closing ceremony, Michael Phelps being the greatest Olympian ever, the openly gay Australian diver who won a gold, and probably a lot more. So, I guess we’ll see yah in the next 4 years in London!

The Twilight Fever. I’ve been bitten! Even though I got a bit busy, I still managed to read a book. In three days, I finished reading Twilight, the international best seller debut novel of Stephenie Meyer. I have heard so much about this book it that’s why I checked it out. And after reading it, there I finally learned what the fuss was about. I liked it, quite an interesting read. A Filipino type of vampire was actually mentioned in the book. The one that’s called a Danag, I wasn’t aware of it actually until I got to read this novel. Now I am so excited to see the movie version! It was supposed to be released on December 12 but I heard it was moved to November. I am actually reading the sequel New Moon, but failed to finish it before the month ends, I’m only halfway through. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series!

Birthdays and Parties! I have attended several birthday parties the whole month. First was a double celebration of my Pop and my Tita Joy. And then a surprise birthday get together for my cousin Wheng, which I planned and was really appreciated. I actually didn’t know that I’ll be good in surprises hehe! Just last week, I was at Buddy’s in Ortigas for an officemate/then schoolmate Aden’s birthday bash. And oh, I also attended RX 93.1’s Anniversary Party dubbed as Too Hot To Handle over at White Avenue in Tomas Morato. Thank goodness for these events and occasions, because I really needed to let loose and somehow forget about the OT thing which is killing me haha! It’s not all work, you know.

E on 8.30.08! What better way to wrap the month up than being part of the biggest concert event of the year, the Eraserheads Reunion Concert! The moment I heard about the news, I was nearly freaking out. That’s why I right away registered to The Red List, but felt like the world shattered when the sponsor backed out. Thank God for our dear friend LT, she included us on the VIP list of Raymund Marasigan! Come Eheads night, we’re all so excited! And the excitement turned into elation as THE legends started to rock The Fort. The opening alone gave me goosebumps! Iba talaga ang Eheads! Malupet! We had a super blast listening to their songs, never fails to bring back good old memories. Too bad it was cut short, but still it’s worth it. I am actually having a hangover, I’ve been downloading their songs online and listening to them all day haha! Rock on! ;)

Master Ely Buendia

the Eraserheaders haha!

So, that’s how I spent my August! Pretty exhausting, isn’t it? Hope you had a blast, too! ;)
